THE AMD ATHLON (tm) Designed in 1998 as a replacement
for the Pentium III AMD Corporation, is the replacement
CPU of choice for applications previously relegated to the Pentium II. The CPU incorporates a
192-K L2 on-die Cache plus a TriLevel Cache architecture and a 6 issue
x86-Risc Instruction set, essentially it is a greatly improved version of the
AMD K6/III, with additional capabilities, features and more than double the
performance. It is fully compatible with the Pentium IIs features, including advanced DSP like performance up
to 1GHz, plus it adds 3D Video Enhancement Instructions and Risc throughput
capabilities. The Athlon is implemented on an updated Chip Carrier CPU
similar to that of the Pentium II, called Slot A, for faster transfers up to
200 MHz between the CPU and the
Mainboard of your PC. It implements support for onboard modems and AGP
Video. And it is relatively inexpensive, resulting in a lower system
cost. The AMD Duron is a new offering from AMD based on the AMD Athlon and K6/3, focusing on low end applications primarily habituated today by the Intel Celeron-MMX.
