CAMEO 6000

The Cameo 6000 is a PCI adapter card that offers up to 60 ports of Modem/ISDN/Fax/Voice terminations. The card interfaces with ISDN-PRI/T1/E1 through a network interface card over the MVIP/SCSA TDM highway.  Each port can independently perform any of the following functions in response to the specific requirements of each call:
Digital (PCM) data modem V.34+, V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis, V.22, V.21, V.23, Bell 212, Bell 103 modulations and V.42/V.42bis error correction
and data compression.

Cameo 6000 Architecture
The port density of the Cameo (60/card) is unmatched in the industry to date.  This phenomenal density enables high density servers, using either a standard PC chassis or custom designed systems.  Its total power consumption is less than 18W when all 60 ports are fully active (<300mW/port).

Each Cameo comes equipped with 60 UPPs (Universal Port Processors) with a total processing power of 8000 Superscaler MIMD (Multiple Instruction Multiple Data) MIPS in addition to a 66 MIPS RISC Contoller. The MVIP/SCSA switch, built into the Cameo offers a total of 256 TDM channels and up to 128 channel cross matrix switching capability.  The PCI architecture includes Bus Mastering DMA capability with up to 132 Mbytes/sec. transfer rate.

By performing functions such as voice/data compression, PPP framing and checksum calculations within the UPPs, in addition to standard modem algorithms and protocols, the Cameo offers unsurpassed performance at the system level.  Full-duplex data throughput tests reveal the per-port throughput performance at peak and dead flat even with all ports fully loaded.

The architecture of the cameo allows upgrades and per-call selectable functionality.  By software selection, various types of communications functions can be assigned on a per-port basis, e.g. modem, ISDN B channel, fax, and voice compression.

This dynamic flexibility allows the Cameo to be utilized in a variety of communications applications — e.g. as a dial-in remote access server, as a dial-out communications server, as a remote access call concentrator, or as a IP Telephony Gateway Server.

 

 
RAS Application of Cameo 6000
In a remote access server (RAS) application, the Cameo/Network Interface would work in conjunction with a LAN adapter. (The Cameo would provide the connection to the physical layer, either as a modem or ISDN B channel.) All higher layers of protocol, authentication, security, and routing of traffic to other nodes on the LAN would then be handled by the underlying operating system. With the appropriate software and hardware, this configuration could permit home offices, satellite offices and traveling sales personnel to remotely access the LAN for conferencing, email and telecommuting applications (see Figure 1a).

In a similar configuration, the Cameo can act as the primary component in a dial-out communications server, thereby providing dial-out access to each node on the LAN. In a typical office, the fax machine is separate from the modem pool and the LAN. With the Cameo the fax, modem and ISDN access are all integrated on the same platform — outgoing faxes could be sent directly from each node (PC) while incoming faxes could be stored on the server and directed to any printer on the LAN. Each node could also establish an independent Internet connection.
 
 
This integration can be carried a step further by directing the Cameo to take voice and pass it onto appropriate hardware. All office voice, data and fax communications could then be handled by Cameo based system.

An another example, the Cameo could serve as a remote access concentrator (RAC).  The Cameo would terminate client modem calls and accept/provide framed PPP data from/to the Host. The data is further processed by the same host or external hardware for routing over the Internet.  With low power per port, high density, low cost and rich features, the Cameo would enable very high density POP servers for ISP applications.   (see Figure 1b).

IP Telephony Application of Cameo 6000
In addition, the Cameo could function as the primary component for IP telephony gateways. The Cameo would compress incoming voice and demodulate incoming fax calls, and provide the resulting data to a Host for IP routing or multiplexing onto a packetized data stream for transmission over the Internet.  Similarly, multiplexed packetized data streams received through the Internet would be routed or multiplexed by the Host and provided to the Cameo to decompress the outgoing voice calls and modulate the outgoing fax calls. (see Figure 1c).
